Today in Nur-Sultan the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Kazakhstan held a seminar on financing sustainable development goals (SDGs) as a part of the "Partnering for building a national SDG Platform" project.

UNDP’s Resident Representative, Mr. Yakup Beris, emphasised that Financing for Development is an important element of the SDG implementation. The latest UN report on Financing for Development shows that interest in sustainable investment has been growing but not yet materializing at the scale required and at places where it is needed.

“We should focus on strengthening the Government’s abilities to link the SDGs to its public finance. This can help both in terms of SDG reporting and having a clear sense of how, exactly, the state budget is financing SDG achievement. The role of the business sector in SDG finance is vital, too. Today we would like to talk about new ways Kazakhstan can mobilize and measure the impact of its investments in terms of SDGs implementation”, - he said. Read full statement here.

Director of the Social Policy and Development of Governmental Agencies Department of the Ministry of Economy, Ms. Zhuldyz Pernebayeva, also underlined the importance of financing sustainable development goals in Kazakhstan.

“For the last six months we’ve achieved a lot, we created a national SDG architecture, prepared our first Voluntary National Report. UNDP helped us significantly, and we want to thank them for that. I hope this cooperation will continue further. SDGs indicators are already deeply integrated into the state planning in Kazakhstan. Our next phase is the practical implementation of SDGs, and the financing plays a very important role in that”, - she noted.

During the seminar Mr. Ben Slay, Senior Economist of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS, gave a presentation on global, regional and local practices of SDGs finance for development. Ms. Irina Goryunova, UNDP’s Assistant Resident Representative, talked about partnering for building a national SDG platform. Ms. Elena Danilova-Cross, Program Specialist, Sustainable Development Unit, UNDP Istanbul Regional Hub, discussed results of the Rapid Integrated Assessment (RIA) of SDG’s in Kazakhstan.

The participants, including representatives of the ministries of National Economy, Finance, Foreign Affairs, Baiterek Holding, Economic Research Institute and Asian Development Bank, discussed potential sources of current and expected future SDG finance in Kazakhstan through 2030 and importance of efforts to increase the efficiency of public finance management.
