Today in Nur-Sultan United Nations Development Programme’s Resident Representative, Yakup Beris, and Asian Development Bank’s Country Director, Giovanni Capannelli, signed an arrangement to support the nationalization and localization of sustainable development goals (SDGs) in Kazakhstan. The scope of work under the agreement will focus on the integration of SDGs in Kazakhstan’s strategic development plans and the provision of advisory support and technical assistance for the promotion of Agenda 2030 and SDGs in the country. The agreement builds on the ongoing collaboration around helping the country prepare for the Voluntary National Review at the United Nations’ High Level Political Forum in July 2019 in New York.
UNDP and ADB have been working together to support Kazakhstan’s key entities such as the Ministry of National Economy to coordinate and monitor the SDG implementation. The project has also been assisting the National Statistics Committee of Kazakhstan in the provision of statistical reporting on the SDGs and the Economic Research Institute (ERI) under the MNE to perform its functions as the country’s SDGs Secretariat. This new agreement of $200,000 increases the project resources to $600,000, contributed by UNDP and ADB, to allow for scaling up the work to create a national platform for SDG implementation.
ADB-UNDP collaboration on promoting the SDGs agenda in Kazakhstan dates back to 2017. The two agencies have been at the core of the SDG nationalization process and have been actively facilitating the establishment of the National SDG Architecture in the country under the Prime Ministry’s leadership. Endorsed by the PM, an SDG Coordination Council was established in August 2018, which is chaired by Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Alikhan Smailov. The council’s work is supported by 5 Inter-governmental Working Groups (WGs), plus a Statistics Committee, ERI serving as the Secretariat for the WGs.
This country level agreement between UNDP and ADB follows the global understanding between the two organizations. A 5-year memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between ADB President Mr. Takehiko Nakao and UNDP Administrator Mr. Achim Steiner on April 12, 2019, in Washington DC, USA, to accelerate progress towards sustainable development in the Asia and the Pacific. The memorandum sets the stage for greater collaboration between the two organizations at the country and regional levels.
