Businesses and the United Nations held their second dialogue on the role of business sector in SDGs at Global Challenges Summit 2018

May 18, 2018

18 May 2018, Astana – Representatives of the United Nations and the business sector have met today at the Global Challenges Summit (Astana Economic Forum 2018) to discuss how business can grow their sustainability by applying the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their practices.

The event called “Transformation of our world. The role of business in achieving the global agenda” was co-organized by the Baiterek National Managing Holding and was the second meeting in a series of SDGs dialogues between the UN and the private companies of Kazakhstan. The first such dialogue was held in February of this year.

The participants in the event included Mr. Norimasa Shimomura, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative; Mr. Aidar Arifkhanov, Chairman of the JSC National Managing Holding “Baiterek”; Mr. Ben Slay, Senior advisor in UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS (RBEC); Mr. Thomas Mirow, the Head of Restructuring and Recovery at Deutsche Genossenschafts Hypothekenbank AG. former EBRD President; Mr. Phillip Yeo, Chairman of Economic Development Innovations Singapore (EDIS); Ms. Alina Aldambergen, KASE Chairperson, Kazakhstan; Ms. Dinara Seitzhaparova, Representative of business, Kazakhstan; Ms. Marcia E. Favale, Founder and CEO, Blingby, Independent Director of Development Bank of Kazakhstan JSC; Mr. Antonio Somma, Member of the Board of directors of Solutions Capital Management SpA (SCM), Independent Director of Development Bank of Kazakhstan JSC and Mr. Klaus Mangold, Independent Director of “Baiterek” National Managing Holding JSC, Chairman of supervisory board of TUI AG, Germany, as well as member supervisory boards of Metro AG, Alstom AG, Continental AG, Alstom S.A. in France and Ernst & Young in the USA, Rothschild GmbH in Frankfurt.

The goal of the meeting was to explore the role that the corporate sector can play in achieving sustainable economic growth in Kazakhstan and the key reforms needed in government policy, financial regulation and regional integration to embed greater sustainability in business practices in Kazakhstan and beyond.

The Sustainable Development Goals were adopted by the world leaders in 2015, and they range from poverty eradication, education and health, advancing women’s opportunities, environmental protection to good governance. The idea of the 17 Goals is to ensure that no one is left behind as the world moves forward in creating and benefitting from a better world. The Goals are a universal call to action to achieve a just, equitable and inclusive world.

“The business sector with its unmatched capacity for innovation, investments, and job creation hold the key to achieving the SDGs. Why? Because successful businesses require stable business environment. SDGs is the best investment to prevent conflicts, mitigate the impacts of natural disasters, and create level-playing field for investors,” said UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Kazakhstan Norimasa Shimomura. “Besides, companies can be ahead of curves by working on SDGs since one will be able to pre-empt the changing taste of the consumers who increasingly prefer to buy cleaner, safer, and more human-rights friendly products,” said Norimasa Shimomura.

According to the Business and Sustainable Development Commission’s landmark report, achieving the SDGs could generate at least USD 12 trillion of market opportunities and create 380 million new jobs by 2030 in the four economic systems: food and agriculture, cities, energy and materials, health, and well-being. This equals to 60% of the ‘real economy’ worldwide. These dividends are conservative estimates, since gender equality goal alone could contribute up to USD 28 trillion to global GDP by 2050.

«Being the main development institution Holding Baiterek is making every effort to promote sustainable development of Kazakhstan through the implementation of state and government programmes, as well as the development of digital technologies that are of particular importance for raising the living standards of the population, increasing labor productivity and optimizing management processes», said Chairman of the JSC National Managing Holding “Baiterek” Aidar Arifkhanov.

According to Mr. Arifkhanov, the principles of sustainable development are well integrated into the organization’s Development Strategy for 2014-2023 and Holding’s Corporate Governance Code and are planned to be used while performing investment analysis and taking investment decisions.
