UN Day 2017 called on university students to the transformation of the world

October 24, 2017, Astana – Today KAZGUU University hosted the celebration of the UN Day. On that day in 1945 the UN Charter entered into force, laying down goals and principles of the United Nations..

“Today we are marking the 72nd anniversary of the United Nations. Values and principles of the UN charter remain valid, and even more relevant than they were 72 years ago, it is certain that the world today is quite different and much more complex with new and immense challenges for sustainable development.” said Norimasa Shimomura, the UN Resident Coordinator in Kazakhstan.

The UN Day brought together Kazakhstan’s university students and called on the creative vision of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that aim at addressing global challenges by 2030. The students of six Astana and Almaty universities (KAZGUU University, Nazarbayev University, ENU, KazNU, KIMEP and the Kazakh Ablaikhan University of International Relations and World Languages) shared their understanding of SDGs through dance, songs, and oratory. 

The students’ performances were judged by a  jury panel that included Mr. Norimasa Shimomura, UN Resident Coordinator in the Republic of Kazakhstan, H.E. Mr. Mikhail Bocharnikov, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Russian Federation, H.E. Mr. Vazken Kavlakian, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Lebanon, Mr. Arman Baisuanov, Deputy Head of the Department of Multilateral Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Tatyana Nemtsan, Director of Public Fund “Akbota”, Mr. Nurlan Adilkhanuly, Vice-Rector for international affairs and development, Ablaikhan University, Ms. Renata Faizova, Director of the Department of Postgraduate Programmes and International Relations, KAZGUU University, and Mr. Vlastimil Samek, DPI Representative in Kazakhstan.

The winners of the first place were awarded with a roundtrip to Moscow. Those, who got the second and the third place, as well as the ones, who received the People’s Choice Award were rewarded with Samsung Galaxy  Edge 7 Smartphones.

The United Nations was established in 1945. The Republic of Kazakhstan became a member of the United Nations on March 2,1992 (GA resolution 46/224). The United Nations system started its country-based operations in Kazakhstan in early 1993 after the conclusion of an agreement between President Nazarbayev and then Secretary-General of the United Nations Boutros Boutros-Ghali on October 5, 1992.
