Solidarity beyond oceans: Kazakhstan donates US$50,000 for Ecuador post-quake recovery effortsJun 14, 2016
New York, 9 June, 2016 – The Government of Kazakhstan extended a hand to the earthquake-affected women and men in Ecuador today by donating US$50,000 to the UN Development Programme (UNDP) recovery efforts that place communities at the centre of the reconstruction process.
“The disasters that happen in Latin America or in any other region—and all those affected—are very close to our hearts and we want this donation to be part of our country’s history of solidarity, beyond continents and beyond oceans,” said Ambassador Kairat Abdrakhmanov, Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the United Nations at a ceremony at UNDP headquarters. “Our modest donation is aimed at expressing condolences to the victims: every single life is so precious.”
“We thank the Government of Kazakhstan for the generosity towards the earthquake-affected Ecuadorians. And we want to assure you that the funds will be directed to support the community and help women and men get back on their feet, so they can reestablish their livelihoods and build back better,” said Jessica Faieta, UN Assistant-Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean.
About 1,000 earthquake-affected Ecuadorians in the hardest hit rural coastal areas—around half of them women—will directly benefit from the Government of Kazakhstan’s donation. The majority of them will be trained and temporarily hired in community emergency reconstruction efforts to safely remove debris and rehabilitate communities.
“We are grateful to the Government of Kazakhstan as we see this not as a political gesture but one of humanity,” said Minister Helena Yánez Loza, Deputy Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations. “It’s very reassuring that the most vulnerable people will be directly receiving these funds, and that the resources will be managed by UNDP: we trust the organization, its transparency and work.”
