Tree planting for SDGsMay 11, 2016
6 MAY 2016, 10 a.m. - Astana- KAZGUU University. A tree planting event has taken place at KAZGUU University to raise awareness about Sustainable Development Goals in Kazakhstan and contribute to greening of Astana. The event was organized jointly with the Earth Foundation "Sustainable Development".
At the UN Summit (25-27 September 2015), the Member States of the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2016-2030 at its core that aim to end extreme poverty, promote equity and opportunity for all, and protect the planet, in close partnership among the nations. Building on the success of MDGs, SDGs are universal goals accepted by all countries and applicable to all – both rich and poor, taking into account different national realities, capacities and levels of development and respecting national policies and priorities. They are integrated and indivisible and balance the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, environmental and social.
In Kazakhstan jointly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other partners, the United Nations agencies will be conducting a series of advocacy events throughout the year to raise awareness about SDGs. The tree planting event is the first in that series and calls upon citizens of Kazakhstan to act today with thinking about our future generation and the planet. Participants will include international community, UN staff and youth community.
The diplomatic corps, Government and community leaders as well as students participated in the tree-planting event, which was an opportunity for Kazakhstan to re-confirm its commitment to fulfil the Sustainable Development Goals.
