Almaty akimat together with the city department of emergency situations sum up the competition “company of the year, the most prepared for emergencies – 2015”Dec 23, 2015
(Almaty, December 21, 2015). The Almaty Akimat and Department of Emergency Situations (DES) summed up the competition "Company of the Year, the most prepared for emergencies - 2015". The ceremony of awarding certificates to representatives of trade and entertainment centers, actively participating in the competition: « MEGA Center Alma-Ata » ., «MAXIMA» and «Promenade» took place in DES premises in Almaty on December 21, 2015. The competition was held within the project "DIPECHO VIII: Strengthening resilience to seismic hazards at the level of urban and rural communities in the south-eastern Kazakhstan," that is being carried out in United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Committee of Emergency Situations of Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan with the financial support of European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO).
According to the National Project Director DIPECHO VIII, Deputy Head of the Department of Emergency Situations of Almaty, Mr. Madyarov Nurlan, under the competition terms the special commission inspected the overall condition of emergency preparedness system in the participating companies as well as the availability of relevant services responsible for customers’ safety during emergencies. Specialists of the Rescue Service at the city akimat held special trainings for staff of the shopping malls, which described the priority actions in the event of an emergency. The staff of the malls also increaseв their knowledge on emergency aid to victims of natural and manmade disasters. Availability of necessary legal and technical documents, including evacuation plans for the staff and visitors in emergencies were also checked.
United Nations Development Program is confident that the competition has been very productive and showed the willingness of socially responsible business to take on the issues of their employees and tenants trainings on emergencies situations and make their malls safe for visitors. Project Manager DIPECHO VIII, Mr. Maxim Kadyrbaev expects that the competition will be held by DES and Akimat on the yearly base. The UNDP representative also handed over to DES the launched website and competition pages in popular social media.
Issues of increasing awareness on seismic threats of Almaty citizens and guests were also addressed within the competition. The shopping malls became an excellent platform to convey the importance of preparing for potential emergencies. The project volunteers held their flash mobs, quizzes and competitions involving individual media: film actors, artists, popular bloggers. All of these efforts have focused on trying to make Almaty a safer city for its residents and guests.

DIPECHO VIII project: “Scaling up resilience to seismic hazards of urban and rural communities in South-East Kazakhstan” is implemented by United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in close cooperation with Committee of Emergency Situation of Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan with financial support of Department of European committee and civil protection (ECHO).
The budget of project is 421 607 USD. ECHO supports relief activities for vulnerable people in crisis zones around the world.
The Project are focused in the development and supporting of innovative approaches in order to secure the readiness for natural disasters both in local and national levels, and provision of assistance to the Government of Republic of Kazakhstan in terms of strengthening of the system in seismic preparedness, elaboration of practical methods of community involvement and commercial sector in seismic-risk management and disaster risk reduction mechanism for further replication by the state authorities.
