NPD coordinates water resource management activities in Kazakhstan.

National Policy Dialogue on water policy was held in Astana on December 2nd 2015.

The agenda was to discuss the future activities in the water sector, carried out by international organizations, government agencies and non-governmental organizations, and their coordination.

"President Nazarbayev in his strategy 2050 clearly identified the goal to solve water supply problems in Kazakhstan. This is not only to provide high-quality water to all regions of the country, but also the management of water resources of Transboundary Rivers,"- said Mr. Bekniyaz, deputy chairman of the Committee on Water Resources Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan at the opening of the session.

There are 8 basins in Kazakhstan and 7 out of them are transboundary and in 6 bassins water comes from neighboring countries. It is important to create and establish a dialogue between countries for fair distribution of water resources of Transboundary Rivers. Joint EU / UNDP / UNECE project "Supporting Kazakhstan’s transition to a Green Economy Model " will make an assessment of the situation in the Ural river and Kigach canal, both of which are shared with the Russian Federation and develop recommendations to address the management issues  those rivers. Project Manager, Gulzhamal Issayeva said that the project will support to develop legal and methodological basis of transboundary rivers management.

Participants of the meeting also discussed the issues of improving the mechanisms of state support, modernization of hydro-technical infrastructures, and further actions to improve water resources management in Kazakhstan.
