The Regional scientific-practical conference in Almaty discusses the problems of management of seismic risks in Central Asia and the Southern CaucasusNov 20, 2015
(Almaty, November 19, 2015) The scientific and practical conference, which opens today on November 19, 2015, in Almaty under aegis of the UN Development Program is devoted to the problems of the effective management of seismic risks in Central Asia and the Southern Caucasus. It has collected scientists, representatives of the State services of Civil Protection of Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Russian Federation and Tajikistan, UN experts, international organizations and NGOs.
The regional conference is held in frameworks of the project DIPECHO VIII: “Scaling up resilience to seismic hazards of urban and rural communities in South-East Kazakhstan”. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Committee of Emergency Situations of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan carries out the project with the financial support of the Department of the European Commission on Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO).
According to the Chairman of the Committee for Emergency Situations of the MIA of RK Mr. Valeriy Petrov, "The lack of awareness and the degree of preparedness of the population to responding to disasters directly influence on the effective interaction between the government bodies and the population of the country". Therefore, the Committee for Emergency Situations is ready to implement worked out practical achievements into their daily work, as a result, of the implementation of the joint projects with the United Nations and other organizations.
According to the experts in the field of Emergency Situation, the results of the joint projects of the Government of Kazakhstan and UNDP have played a significant positive role in building the capacity of Kazakhstan in the sphere of combating to disasters in the republic since 1998.
On the plenary sessions and round tables, the two-day program of the conference foresees the discussion of innovative approaches in the disaster risk reduction for supplying the sustainable development of countries of the region. It discusses the implementation of measures to mitigate the effects of emergencies related to seismic risks in the target communities (e.g. rural communities, cooperatives of apartment owners in cities, schools, people with disabilities and other more vulnerable groups of the population). The particular attention will be given to the experience on the development of new approaches on issues of conducting information campaigns and awareness of the population about the threats of emergencies.
Also within the framework of the regional conference the ceremonial transfer of the mobile training center - an earthquake simulation on the mobile platform to the Republican Training Center for Civil Protection of the Republic of Kazakhstan will be held on November 20, 2015.
The result of the work of the Regional Conference will be the adoption of the final document with the scientific and practical recommendations for the management of seismic risks.

DIPECHO VIII project: “Scaling up resilience to seismic hazards of urban and rural communities in South-East Kazakhstan” is implemented by United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in close cooperation with Committee of Emergency Situation of Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan with financial support of the European Commission's Humanitarian aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO).
The budget of project is 421 607 USD. ECHO supports relief activities for vulnerable people in crisis zones around the world.
The Project are focused in the development and supporting of innovative approaches in order to secure the readiness for natural disasters both in local and national levels, and provision of assistance to the Government of Republic of Kazakhstan in terms of strengthening of the system in seismic preparedness, elaboration of practical methods of community involvement and commercial sector in seismic-risk management and disaster risk reduction mechanism for further replication by the state authorities.***
