The conference on combating desertification is being held in Ankara

The Twelfth session of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention to Combat Desertification is being held from October 12 to October 23 in the city of Ankara.  The issues on land degradation impacts neutralization, the efficiency of the Convention implementation at the national, subregional and regional levels and the issues on attraction additional investments are being discussed at it. Kazakhstan has been the party to the Convention since 1997.

Within the framework of the GEF/UNDP "Supporting the Updating of the National Action Plan and Reporting and Performance Review Process for the Implementation of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification in Kazakhstan" Project strategic measures to combat desertification till 2025 have been prepared. They are the basis for consideration of land degradation as a serious problem posing a threat to the standards of living of the population and to environmental and food security of the country. The strategic measures have been defined to achieve higher global environmental benefits, sustainable arable land, pastures and forests management and mitigate the impacts related to environmental crisis of the Aral Sea.

The document was presented by Yerlan Zhumabayev, the project manager of the UNDP sustainable land management projects and in combination the correspondent on science and technologies of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification in Kazakhstan.

The strategic measures are focused on application of environmentally sustainable, economically viable and socially applicable practices on the use of land and other natural resources, so securing higher standards of living and reducing poverty, especially for country people for whom the land is an important source of livelihoods.
