Social Good Summit and Sustainable Development GoalsSep 29, 2015
28 September, 2015 Astana hosted a Social Good Summit meet-up with an open-access event exploring the influence of new technologies on the development processes in Kazakhstan. This year’s theme is #2030NOW “New Goals. New Power. New Technology. What have you done to help develop your country and how can new technologies enable the society to participate in development processes?” The event brought together national stakeholders, innovators and media experts who listened to novel ideas and shared views on the increasingly crucial role that new technology is playing in bringing about sustainable development.
This year the global Social Good Summit was built around the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These seventeen goals were launched at the United Nations General Assembly on 25 September. The SDGs have six major elements at their centre, among them people, dignity, prosperity, justice, partnerships and the planet.
“Sustainable development in the 21st century is not something which happens to somebody else, somewhere else. We all have a stake in it -- and every country has work to do to progress towards it. The good news is that our world has more wealth, more knowledge, and more technologies at its disposal than ever before. The challenges we face are mostly human induced. We can tackle them, but not if we keep doing business as usual and expecting different results. Ours is the last generation which can head off the worst effects of climate change, and the first generation with the wealth and knowledge to eradicate poverty. For this, fearless leadership from us all is needed,” said UNDP Administrator Helen Clark in her Statement on the Adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (full speech available here: http://www.kz.undp.org/content/kazakhstan/en/home/presscenter/speeches/2015/06/18/-statement-by-undp-administrator-helen-clark-on-pope-francis-encyclical-on-the-environment-and-the-poor1.html).
“Kazakhstan is in a very good position to be one of the leading nations for promoting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Not only because of rapid transformation that Kazakhstan has been able to go through in the past 15 years, but also because it can promote internationally issues such as global partnership for development, South-South cooperation as well as issues such as achieving accountable and transparent institutions and governance that is accountable to all people. Without involvement of every person, of youth, of civil society organizations, of communities, and of private sector we will not be able to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The Social Good Summit meetup in Kazakhstan will be a step forward towards making the achievement of SDGs a reality on the ground,” UNDP Kazakhstan Deputy Resident Representative Munkhtuya Altangerel said.
This year the Forum brought together young innovators, among them was young scientist Damel Mektepbayeva, executive director of Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity, Vera Voronova, President of Rotary Club Gareth Stamp, representative of Astana Innovations Zaure Mukanova, young businessman Samgau Nasypkhan and many others.
«The world is now developing at a dozens’ time faster rate than before. You can carry around all the necessary information in your back pocket – all you need to do is simply get an iPhone. This is why it’s important to have Social Good Summits like this one. It gives us a chance to see what various organizations are working on. Today I’ve learned about start-up projects at Astana Innovations. Moreover, I learned about the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. One of the goals is specifically dedicated to the development of new technologies and innovations,” said participant of the Forum Svetlana Legkachyova.
The Social Good Summit is a global conference, with the main event taking place in New York. It unites a dynamic community of global leaders and grassroots activists to discuss solutions for the greatest challenges of our time. During the Social Good Summit, global citizens around the world unite to unlock the potential of technology to make the world a better place.Contact information
