“Green economy” is defined as an economy with a high level of quality of life, careful and rational use of natural resources for present and future generations and in accordance with the state’s international environmental commitments, including Rio de Janeiro principles, Agenda 21, the Johannesburg Plan and the Millennium Declaration.

“Green economy” is a one of important instruments for sustainable development. Since 2012 UNDP in Kazakhstan has been providing institutional support to the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the development of the Concept of the Republic of Kazakhstan for the transition to a "green economy".  The strategic goal of the republic’s entering the list of 30 most developed countries in the world by 2050 can be achieved with the socio-economic modernization of the country in global competition, as well as its transition to a "green economy". Developing and implementing projects in consonance with national strategic documents such as the Strategy "Kazakhstan-2050" and others, UNDP actively supports the transition of Kazakhstan to" green economy " in practice.
