17 Goals

28 September, 2015 – Astana will host a Social Good Summit meet-up with an open-access event exploring the influence of new technologies on the development processes in Kazakhstan. This year’s theme is #2030NOW “New Goals. New Power. New Technology. What have you done to help develop your country and how can new technologies enable the society to participate in development processes?” The event will bring together national stakeholders, innovators and media experts who will listen to novel ideas and share views on the increasingly crucial role that new technology is playing in bringing about sustainable development.

This year the global Social Good Summit will be built around the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These seventeen goals will be launched at the United Nations General Assembly on 25 September. The SDGs will have six major elements at their centre, among them people, dignity, prosperity, justice, partnerships and the planet.

“It’s vital that we all work together for this very ambitious and far-reaching agenda. We need to make sure that citizens around the world know about the new Goals and hold the Governments accountable for striving to achieve those goals. Last year 74 country offices held Social Good Summit events. And this year as we are marking the beginning of the new Development Agenda, I want to see every UNDP country office around the globe take part in the Summit, and help make the new global goals a household name everywhere,” UNDP Administrator Helen Clark said.

“Kazakhstan is in a very good position to be one of the leading nations for promoting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Not only because of rapid transformation that Kazakhstan has been able to go through in the past 15 years, but also because it can promote internationally issues such as global partnership for development, South-South cooperation as well as issues such as achieving accountable and transparent institutions and governance that is accountable to all people. Without involvement of every person, of youth, of civil society organizations, of communities, and of private sector we will not be able to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The Social Good Summit meetup in Kazakhstan will be a step forward towards making the achievement of SDGs a reality on the ground,” UNDP Kazakhstan Deputy Resident Representative Munkhtuya Altangerel said.

The Social Good Summit is a global conference, with the main event taking place in New York. It unites a dynamic community of global leaders and grassroots activists to discuss solutions for the greatest challenges of our time. During the Social Good Summit, global citizens around the world unite to unlock the potential of technology to make the world a better place.
