Joint EU/UNDP/UNECE project “Supporting Kazakhstan’s Transition to a Green Economy Model”

About the project:

Kazakhstan took a decision to transform its economy into sustainable Green Economy, thus aiming at implementing a completely new development paradigm. The overall objective of the Project is to contribute to the long-term environmentally sustainable and inclusive economic development of Kazakhstan through introduction of modern environmental governance system, state-of-the-art water management policies and practices, enhanced environmental impact assessment procedures and economic incentives for sustainable use of water resources. 

The Project is developed in consultation with the key stakeholders, and is fully aligned with top policy priorities of the Government of Kazakhstan. National ownership is ensured through active participation of national governmental and non-governmental institutions. To ensure long-term sustainable impact, the Project builds upon experiences and lessons learnt from previous, and will generate substantial synergies with on-going sustainable development activities. 

The Project is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as lead organization in partnership with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

Expected results:

  • To contribute to sustainable water management policies and practices 
  • To promote a modernized environmental governance system aimed at generating incentives for the transition to a Green Economy model with focus on water resources and climate change 
  • To promote the GE transition at local level with focus on water resources and climate change
